Thingvellir is a sacred site to Icelanders. It’s got everything for enthusiast of nature, geology and history a like. The name Thingvellir is Icelandic for Parliament plains. Today the area is a national park and a UNESCO site.
We take you through the mountain terrain lying south of Thingvellir giving you a beautiful view over the great lake Thingvallavatn.
Thingvellir is one of only two places on the earth where you can visibly see the mid-atlantic rift. Snap a photo from the viewpoint and take a stroll down Almannagja. You will geologically be walking in between continents because the gorge lies between the Eurasian plate and North American plate. You also get to experience the more than 1000 years of history at Thingvellir. Stand on the old parliament fields where the Vikings founded the worlds first parliament back in 930AD.
If you want to see a volcanic crater Kerid is the place. This crated erupted in the lowlands roughly 3.000 years ago and has today turned into a picturesque area for travellers to enjoy. The crater forms an almost perfect bowl with a lake in the center. It’s been used as a venue for concerts throughout the years.
We end our day with an adventure at Hengill, a huge active volcano spanning an area of 100km2. We take you off road to show you the hot springs in the geothermal area of the volcano.
